Appreciation of an artist without borders: The Warner recordings by Andr Previn in an extensive box As a conductor, pianist, composer and media personality, Andre Previn’s work was distinguished by an enormous range of musical genres and forms of expression. As a prodigy in his hometown of Berlin, he moved to the United States in 1939 and made an early career in Hollywood, where he won four Oscars. During his time as chief conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra (19681979), he established himself as an important interpreter of the symphonic repertoire, especially of Russian, French and British music The very definition of good conducting, Gramophone wrote about his acclaimed LSO version of Tchaikovsky’s nutcracker. The scope of Previn’s relationship with the LSO is duly reflected in this 96 CD box set, which includes all of his HMV and Teldecc discography, including several CD premieres. Also included are recordings with orchestras such as the Pittsburgh Symphony, Chicago Symphony and the Vienna Philharmonic.
